In the beginning of the second part of Volume 1, the focus is largely upon Mr. Collins,, the cousin of the Bennets and the future inheritor of Hertfordshire. On page 69, his actions for the section are given a description when Austen writes, “Having now a good house … disinterested on his own part” (Austen 69). This sentiment is just downright disturbing disturbing to me, because his primary reason for coming to Hertfordshire is to marry HIS COUSIN… ICK! I fully know that this was a very different time in which situations of this nature were more acceptable, but still. Hmm, I am looking for a wife, why not go to a family party and find her there. Said no one ever (apparently except for Mr. Collins ew). Then the Bennet sisters and Mr. Collins go to Merytown and meet a stranger, Mr Wickham, a hottie, and Mr. Darcy’s nemesis.
Alright, now more on Wickham. He is a soldier, but he wants to be something like a clergyman. His history with Darcy is juicy and awesomely saucy. Apparently all the money that Darcy inherited from his late father, is in fact supposed to be inherited by Wickham! Darcy has been jealous of Wickhams’s relationship with Mr. Darcy since his youth. Due to this relationship, his inheritance was told to be given to Wickham instead of his son Darcy. When Lizzy inquires as to why Darcy has the fortune, Wickham says, “There was just such an informality… in short, anything or nothing” (Austen 78). In short, Darcy is a scuz muffin and Wickham is my new overly attractive fav.
Segue to Lizzy, who seems to attract every man in the book I swear to God, she’s a babe magnet. Darcy, Wickham and Mr. Collins (EW), are all very flirty with Lizzy at some point in this part of the book. Darcy is always staring at her, Wickham chooses to talk to her over all the girls at Netherfield, and Mr. Collins is just overly ecstatic to be around so many women. He defaults to Lizzy because Jane, Lizzy’s oldest sister is married. In the first part, Lizzy seems to fancy Darcy, but then Wickham tells her that he is a scuzball, and then she falls for Wickham and she is never attracted to Mr. Collins (good). Apparently Darcy is Lady Catherine’s nephew. I am currently unsure what the relationship between Collins and Lady Catherine and Miss de Bourgh are. At first i thought Mr. Collins wanted to marry Miss de Bourgh, but then he wants to marry a Bennet and I still have no idea what is happening.
THEN FRICKEN MR. COLLINS ASKS LIZZY TO MARRY HIM BECAUSE LADY CATHERINE TOLD HIM TO MARRY AND SHES LIKE HELL NO GET OUT OF MY HOUSE. I ALSO DRY HEAVED A LITTLE BIT IN THESE 5 PAGES JUST GRODY, ICK. It also makes me happy because Lizzy family zones Mr. Collins oh gosh and he still will not take no for an answer. “I am perfectly serious in my refusal… ill qualified for the situation” (Austen 105). No means no buddy she isn’t being a “usual young lady” (Austen 104). Sorry you’re a bad dancer and also her cousin you weirdo. Maybe if you looked like Ryan Gosling you could get Lizzy sorry bye.
Then Mrs. Bennet tries to force marriage on Lizzy because that is her only goal in life. Mr. Bennet is like what no, you’re crazy Mrs. Bennet she can’t marry that wingut. Then things get really awkward and Mr. Collins is thirsty for a wife and asks Charlotte Lucas, Lizzy’s best friend, to marry him! Hmm, Lizzy said no, she’s a foolish young girl, who is the next best person to ask to marry me two days later?????? That’s right, her best friend, I am a genius - Mr. Collins. Then poor Jane gets a letter than the Bingley’s are leaving the country (?) or at least leaving Netherfield. She thinks it’s because Mrs. Bingley does not want her and Mr. Bingley to be together and that is just dumb. I don’t like how much the parents control the fate of their children in this book, or this time period. #independence
Last thought, Austen uses the same -----shire syntax that Bronte used in Jane Eyre, and I remembered we talked about what it meant, but I forgot. Also, I have no idea how exactly Lizzy and Darcy are going to end up together, but I’m so excited!
