"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife" (Austen 1). The essence of the entire book, the topic of my essay and a large part of Austen's social commentary through Pride and Prejudice all summed up into one sentence. The beauty eloquence, and control of the English language that Austen honestly brings me to tears:)
Sassy First Impressions:
-Oh my god, if they introduce another character into this book in the first 67 pages my head might pop off.
-I want to live in a time when women are courted and invited to balls, and go dressed in eloquent gowns.
-Fitzwilliam is THE MOST pretentious name ever, but I love it.
-All the older characters in the book (Mrs. Bingley especially) are very judgemental
-Apparently a cold requires the care of two entire families and multiple doctors #wimps
-The relationships in this book are more complicated than Glee.
-Very confused in the best kind of way.

(The only way to keep track of everything that is happening in this book is to look at this regularly.)n

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife" (Austen 1). I noticed that throughout the the first part of the novel, all of the unmarried girls and their mothers obsess over money, land, occupation and endowments. At first I thought that this was very superficial and shallow, however, I realized that in a time when new company is rare, every girl must fight for the only available and eligible bachelors around. This sentiment, is also not all that different from the way some relationships go today. I mean there is a song called "Gold Digger" by the critically acclaimed Kanye West. The sentiment of marrying for the money is something that in the day of the Bennets, was the only thing considered when choosing a suitor for your daughter. Even today, in a society where women work 9-5 with their husbands, fathers and brothers, some girls are taught to marry rich so the do not have to worry when they are older. Although this seems like a sweet deal, for both the Bennet girls and Paris Hilton, this does not allow a relationship to form on a more amorous and internal level. However, the relationship that seems to be kindling between Darcy and Lizzy is one that I believe will be the most healthy of those in the book, for although it is dissaproved of by man the connection they share is one that is not based of a superficial and materialist foundation of the typical relationship of this time period. #BetterLoveStoryThanTwilight #EverythingisbetterthanTwilight
The introduction to Darcy and his long letters makes me happy because doing this in hindsight of reading the whole book this is the only time that Darcy is portrayed as the super jerk he is in the rest of the book. He even might be considered humble when he says, "They are generally long; but whether always charming, it is not for me to determine" (Austen 47). Probably the reason he is such a jerk is probably because as soon as anyone compliments him, someone in the room always decides to make it not a compliment, like Mrs. Bingley does in this situation. She takes the compliment that he was just given and turns it in to a demeaning comment about his lack of intelligence. THEN while Darcy is finishing his letter, there is the first little spark of their LOVE, as Darcy can't, as usual, keep his eyes off his beautiful Lizzy.Even though it obvious something is there between Darcy and Lizzy, she has been trained by her mother that she is not the prettiest girl she believes that he is looking at her because she has some sort of unattractive flaw. "She could only imagine ... care for his approbation" (Austen 50).
Then is possibly the most aggravating letter of the whole entire book, Mr. Collins tells the Bennet's how awkward he feels about taking Netherfield from the Bennet's when Mr. Bennet dies. LIKE OK MR COLLINS YOU ARE SO FULL OF CRAP OH MY GOD. DO YOU ACTUALLY CARE????? NO YOU'RE SIMPLY TRYING TO MAKE YOURSELF LOOK LIKE SOMEHOW YOU'RE ACTUALLY NOT IN THE WRONG BECAUSE YOU ARE A CONCEITED LITTLE JERK. THE FACT THAT YOUR SKETCHY SELF GETS THE BENNET LAND INSTEAD OF THE GIRLS MAKES ME HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE TIME AND THAT MEN GET EVERYTHING. HONESTLY ALMOST EVERY MAN IN THIS BOOK IS MARRIED TO SOMEONE WHO IS LESS ANNOYING, CONCEITED, AND FULL OF THEMSELVES. PERSONALLY I THINK THAT THE WOMEN IN THIS BOOK, IF IN CHARGE OF COURTING, HOUSING AND RELATIONS WOULD MAKE EVERYTHING A HELL OF A LOT EASIER FOR EVERYONE BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT STUPID MEN. sorry about that:)
